Termites need moisture because they have little resistance
to dehydration. This
is the reason that nests are produced in soil. However, where faulty
plumbing or roofing occurs, sufficient moisture for nesting may be
consistently present in the wood. Wood that is in contact with the
ground is easily
attacked. Mud tunnels or tubes, can extend up to 60
feet and can allow a colony to reach wood several feet above the ground.
