Subterranean termites eat wood and items that contain
cellulose, such as paper, cardboard
and some organic cloth. The presence of single-celled animals (protests)
in the termites’ digestive tract gives them the ability to digest
cellulose. Workers share nourishment with the young, as well as with
soldiers and reproductives. The termites are able to more easily penetrate
rotten wood. They are attracted to the odor of a fungi that is present
in decaying wood.
