As may be guessed from their name, drywood termites infest dry wood.
Unlike carpenter ants, they do not attack decayed wood. During the fall
months the drywood termites migrate to structures from their nests in
trees, posts or stored lumber.

Dry conditions can be tolerated by drywood termites for extended periods
since they only require a small amount of moisture. This means that
there is no need for them to maintain contact with the soil, so they
do not
utilize mud tubes as do the subterranean termites.
Several species reside in the U.S. These include the western and the
desert drywood termite.
