Swarming is an obvious sign of infestation. This is when the kings and
queens take flight to begin new colonies. The wings are temporary and
come off shortly after the flight. Discarded wings may be present on
windowsills. If they appear in the house it is likely that there is
an infestation in the home.

Piles of fecal pellets are also a sign of infestation. These
are cleared out of galleries and can be found beneath the infested wood.
They are
six sided with rounded ends and measure about 1/4 inch long.
An infestation that has advanced will show signs of surface blisters.
This indicates tunnels that come very close to the surface of the
wood. Tapping the surface of the wood will reveal a hollow sound.
