- Examine for shelter tubes on foundations of all structures. Pay particular
attention to joints, cracks or expansion joints.
Check attached porches,
connecting patios, sidewalks, areas near kitchens or bathrooms (confined
or hard-to-see places need special
attention).
Check around the foundation for excess moisture from
poor drainage.
Check window and door frames.
Check where pipes or wires enter the
structure.
Observe roof eaves and gutters for defects that might
cause leakage and eventual wood rot.
Inspect behind closely planted,
dense shrubbery or foliage.
Note any earth-to-wood contact such as
fences, stairs or trellises.
Open and examine exterior electrical
meter or fuse boxes in walls.
Carefully inspect wood materials next
to swimming pools that may be splashed frequently by water.
- Check for blistering
in surface paint, probe with an ice pick or tap to see if there is
a hollow
sound.
Probe or carefully sound exterior porches, doors
and window facings, baseboards and hardwood
flooring.
Water stains on walls or ceilings may indicate
leaks that can decay wood and aid termite
infestation. Especially
inspect
where
plumbing
or utility pipes enter the foundation or
flooring.
Check for raised or split areas under floor
coverings.
Carefully examine where plumbing enters
the house, be sure to check the bath
trap area.
Examine attic for shelter tubes, water
leakage, rotted or damaged wood.
If there is a crawl space under the
house, examine all beams, chimney
bases, hearths
and piers for
shelter tubes.
Look carefully where
the floor and the wall intersect at the top
of the
foundation
wall.
