Detection of Termites

Where to Check Outside:

  • Examine for shelter tubes on foundations of all structures. Pay particular attention to joints, cracks or expansion joints.
  • Check attached porches, connecting patios, sidewalks, areas near kitchens or bathrooms (confined or hard-to-see places need special attention).
  • Check around the foundation for excess moisture from poor drainage.
  • Check window and door frames.
  • Check where pipes or wires enter the structure.
  • Observe roof eaves and gutters for defects that might cause leakage and eventual wood rot.
  • Inspect behind closely planted, dense shrubbery or foliage.
  • Note any earth-to-wood contact such as fences, stairs or trellises.
  • Open and examine exterior electrical meter or fuse boxes in walls.
  • Carefully inspect wood materials next to swimming pools that may be splashed frequently by water.

Where to Check Inside:

  • Check for blistering in surface paint, probe with an ice pick or tap to see if there is a hollow sound.
  • Probe or carefully sound exterior porches, doors and window facings, baseboards and hardwood flooring.
  • Water stains on walls or ceilings may indicate leaks that can decay wood and aid termite infestation. Especially inspect where plumbing or utility pipes enter the foundation or flooring.
  • Check for raised or split areas under floor coverings.
  • Carefully examine where plumbing enters the house, be sure to check the bath trap area.
  • Examine attic for shelter tubes, water leakage, rotted or damaged wood.
  • If there is a crawl space under the house, examine all beams, chimney bases, hearths and piers for shelter tubes.
  • Look carefully where the floor and the wall intersect at the top of the foundation wall.
